Got a garage in your home that doesn’t get used? Turn it into a space for relaxing, entertaining and working. A man cave is a great way to make good use of a big space in your home that does nothing but store junk and collect dust. To make your garage a pleasant place to be (especially in winter), there’s a few changes you’ll have to make.
Cleaning
Many of us use our garages to store bikes, tools, boxes of old clothes, cleaning supplies, etc. To be able to create a true man cave, you’ll need a blank canvas. That’ll probably involve a lot of clearing and cleaning. Go through everything in your garage and see if you can either get rid of it, find a new spot for it or organise it more neatly.
The Floor
Most garages have just the concrete slab as the floor, which is quite cold. Add comfort and ambiance to the room with new flooring. Depending on how far you want to go, you could put down a few rugs or install insulation and floor boards. More affordable options include using carpet remnants, interlocking rubber tiles or floating floor boards that simply clip together.
Walls
Depending on how cold it gets, you may need to insulate the walls to ensure comfort in winter. Detached garages will need more insulation as they can’t get any warmth from the heating system inside the house. If your garage is unfinished, you can simply put up the insulation between the wall studs and cover it by installing drywall.
Paint the walls whatever colour you like once installed or decorate it with posters. Then you can go ahead and mount a TV or a basketball hop or a dart board depending on what you want to use the space for.
What to Put in There
A man cave is whatever you want it to be. Make it your own. You might enjoy having the garage as a garage in some areas, with a little workshop and tools hanging on the walls or camping gear in the corner. Otherwise, you might want to deck the whole place out like a dive bar, complete with a pool table, wine rack and keg. It’s up to you.
Security
If you’re going to keep a big flat screen TV and other valuables in your new man cave, you’ll want to ensure the space is secure. A quality electric garage door is a great solution in terms of security and convenience. This ensures the space can only be accessed from the outside with a code or garage door remote.
